Hello! I am Elizabeth Ford, a sophomore Kinesiology major at Texas A&M University and long time health fanatic. Coaching my dad on exercises and healthy food has gotten old because well, he has gotten old and no longer wants to impress the 20 year olds at the local gym. So therefore I need a bigger audience to impart my knowledge. You my friend are it!
As we all know College Station is not well known for its organic restaurants or businesses but if you dig deep enough you will find well known places that buy locally grown ingredients for most or all of their foods that may surprise you. Instead of committing all the man hours slaving over a computer, I am saving you time and I am cluing you in on local hot spots to stay healthy and support the College Station/Bryan area!
There are five different types of locally grown organic listings in B/CS including: 2 bakers, 1 CSA, 2 farmers, 1 store and 2 restaurants. Now these listings either mean they grow organic healthy foods, sell or make foods from farms right here in Bryan-College Station. What is a CSA right? I didn’t forget to clarify the health food lingo for you! A CSA is Community Supported Agriculture. By this I mean the community buys shares, or “memberships”, to the farm and in return receives a basket of fruit, veggies or farm products in season. Great I know. Even better is each week within a season you get a box of healthy super-fresh foods! There can’t be a better way give back to Aggieland and explore new foods loaded with natural vitamins and flavor!
The rest of listings are pretty straight forward but still equally interesting-if not more! What is in the following blog is just the tip of the ice berg to introduce you to the amazing world of natural food! In later blogs I will deliver the hot spots I promised and hopefully persuade you to investigate truly healthy foods, nix the high fructose syrup(their commercials claiming innocence don’t fool us huh!) and eat locally!
